The United Nations has proclaimed 22 May - The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

- having refused food and water for more than 500 weeks, she has been called "the world's longest hunger striker". She is currently under trial for attempted suicide. Preliminary hearing was held on 4th March 2013 in Delhi Patiala District & Sessions Court No 4. The next hearing is due for 22nd May.

Malyalam now joins Tamil, Kannada and Telugu, all members of Dravidian linguistic family, as the fourth 'classical' languages of South India. The decision, it has been clarified by the Ministry of Culture, would be subject to final decision on a writ petition pending before the Madras High Court. The decision would result in the State getting 100 crore from the Centre and support for various projects to promote the language and its literature.
Chinese mathematician Yintang Zhang has come up with a result that is seen as a step towards solving the twin prime conjecture problem in mathematics. He has proved that there are infinitely many consecutive primes with a gap N such that N is less than 70 million.
